New trend in giving benefits BX Scholarship Program

Over the past several years, the Builders Exchange Foundation has enjoyed a groundswell of support, coming from members looking to honor individuals who have been instrumental in shaping our industry.

Each year, a reception honoring the scholarship recipients draws some very special industry icons to the Exchange to share in the celebration.

To find how you can establish a named scholarship, or for more information about the Foundation, contact Cathy Blackford at the Exchange, 614/486-9521, ext. 234.

In the fall of 2006, Elford executives established a scholarship to celebrate long-time leader and retired Chair Tom C. Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick is pictured (left) with Derek Schmid, the first recipient of the scholarship award that bears Fitzpatrick’s name.
In 2007, Speer Mechanical executives created a named scholarship to mark the 50th anniversary of Chair, Sam Shuman with their firm. Shuman (right) shown with the first Samual A. Shuman scholarship winner, Joshua McRoberts (left) and his parents.
The Mid-City Electric Scholarship was established in 2006 to honor the contributions of Jim Dew to the industry. Dew and his four children who are part of the Mid-City team were on-hand to meet the 2007 Mid-City scholarship recipient, Matthew Sprinkle (third from left), pictured here with Mid-City’s Dew family (from left) Jim, Brian, Denny, Mary and Steve.

Ben M. and Ruth Kramer established a scholarship in 2006 to honor Kramer’s late father, Ben W. Kramer. The Kramers spent time with 2007 scholarship recipient, Russell Moeller (center).

Pete Miller established the Miller Family Scholarship to recognize the four generations (and counting) of Millers who have found a home in the industry. Pictured are Pete (right) with his parents Ruth and Frank.

In 2003 Lincoln Construction owners, Kurt Schmitt, president, and Bruce Dew, vice president, created a scholarship to reward outstanding future construction managers, who will positively impact the central Ohio industry. Schmitt (left) and Dew (right) are shown here with 2007 scholarship recipient, Andrew McMillen.

The Tyler Ludwig Leadership Award was created in 2001 in memory of Tyler Ludwig (1988-2001), the late son of active Exchange volunteer leader, Mark Ludwig (shown second from left). The award recognizes outstanding leadership qualities in students pursing construction-related degrees and is supported by friends of Tyler and his family, and by Continental Building Systems. Also pictured are award winners (from left) Joseph Bindas (2004), Luis Martinez (2005) and Jon Cook (2006).

To show their faith in the future of the industry, Janice and Doug Cooper (Liberty Construction Services, Inc.) created a perpetual scholarship at the Builders Exchange Foundation. Beginning in 2009, the Liberty Scholarship will be awarded annually as part oft he BX Scholarship Program.
