GET INVOLVED

about bX home membership information

With thousands of employees in its more than 1,000 member firms, the Builders Exchange provides many opportunities for business networking and industry service. BX volunteers benefit from their involvement, and the organization benefits from our volunteers' expertise.

Meet Other Members

The BX Financial Group - Made up of members who are accountants, bankers, lenders, bonding and insurance agents, the Financial Group keeps the BX current on issues in two ways. Its members offer seminars on construction economic trends, tax issues, business and financial planning, and also write articles on these topics for the Exchange newsletter.

"Idea Exchange" Groups - The I-X Groups are small (10-15 different firm representatives), informal groups of members who meet regularly to discuss industry issues and share ideas. Group members must be BX active or associate members and each is from different, non-competing professions.

The Law Group of the BX - The Law Group is made up of attorneys from BX member law firms, who meet bimonthly to plan legal seminars for the Exchange and to discuss recent industry legal issues. The Law Group maintains an "Opinion Library" of construction-related court decisions in which its members have been involved. Law Group members also write guest articles for the Exchange newsletter about court decisions or recent legislation important to the industry.

The BX Safety Advisory Council - This informal group of safety directors meet quarterly to "compare notes" on important safety issues and to help direct the offerings of the BX Safety Program. Council members benefit from the information exchanged with their peers, and the BX benefits by learning about the day-to-day concerns of BX members. There is no cost to participate in the SAC, but council members must work for a BX member firm.

BX Special Events - Several key social events are held by the Exchange during the year, which attract hundreds of industry members. Don't miss the BXF "Construction Open" golf outing in June (with over 500 attendees), the BX Open House in September (over 700 attendees) and the BX Annual Meeting in November (over 900 attendees).

Volunteer for the Industry

Teach classes - Member specialists in dozens of topics, ranging from safety to field supervision to project management, teach the continuing education courses offered year-round by the Exchange. Volunteers often "team teach" programs, and are assisted by BX staff in preparing course materials. The experience is as fun as it is rewarding, so consider sharing your experience in this meaningful way.

Speak to students about construction careers - BX members visit middle school classrooms in Central Ohio three to four times each week, to promote industry-related careers. The "Student Outreach" volunteer speakers work in pairs, with a man and a woman on each speaker team. Materials and a career video are provided by the BX, who also coordinates all speakers with school presentation requests.

Write guest articles - In addition to the BX Web site, the Exchange has a weekly printed newsletter. Both media welcome guest articles from members on topics of significance to the commercial construction industry.

Judge awards programs - The Exchange gives annual awards to deserving leaders and students in the industry. Dozens of volunteer judges are needed for:

  • Cornerstone Award

  • Craftsmanship Awards

  • Safety Awards

  • Scholarship Awards

Serve on Advisory Boards

Almost every program at the Builders Exchange is overseen by a member advisory board, who define the industry's needs and share their management expertise with the BX staff. Volunteers are needed for:

  • The BX Education Advisory Council

  • The BX Human Resources Advisory Council

  • The BX Safety Advisory Council

  • The BX Workers' Compensation Group Rating Plan Board of Trustees
