Design Review with Tod Williams and
Billie Tsien
Tod Williams and Billie Tsien are the
husband-and-wife team behind the design firm, Tod Williams Billie
Tsien and Associates.
The New York-based firm is among the
most celebrated and critically acclaimed firms in the world of
contemporary architecture, known for lyrical designs that bring out
the humanity in institutional buildings and highlight the poetic in
residential ones. Recently elected as fellows to the American
Academy of Arts and Sciences, their projects include the American
Folk Art Museum in New York City, Johns Hopkins University’s
Mattin Student Art Center in Baltimore, the Neurosciences Institute
in La Jolla, Calif, Skirkanich Hall at the University of
Pennsylvania, and the Cranbrook Natatorium in Bloomfield Hills,
Michigan. They have been selected to design an addition to the
Columbus Museum of Art.
Williams and Tsien have received
numerous honors and awards for their work. Among them are the
Brunner Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the
Medal of Honor from the New York City AIA and the Chrysler Award for
Design Innovation. The American Folk Art Museum received the Arup
World Architecture Award for “Best Building in the World.” Their
firm has won numerous National AIA Awards.
Tsien and Williams have maintained
busy academic schedules alongside their architectural practice. The
Southern California Institute of Architecture, Parsons School of
Design, Princeton, Harvard, Cooper Union, Columbia, the Rhode Island
School of Design, the University of Texas at Austin and Helsinki
University are among the many prestigious institutions where one or
both have taught.
