Looming Construction Workforce Shortage: One Model to
Address the Challenge
Description:
When the industry focuses on
the future, construction workforce shortages are a growing
concern. Michele
Russo, director of green content and research

Conference by sharing statistics on what industry
employers may expect post- recession. Daniel
Groves, director of operations and a workforce consultant
for the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT), an
international organization for construction owners,
returns to the Conference with an update on how the
industry is using a supply-and-demand forecasting model
for national craft labor.
Known as the Construction Labor Market Analyzer,
the tool will help various markets prepare for coming
workforce needs.

(M1) Lean
Construction: This Owner Cares and So Should You
Description:
Learn why this health care
owner is so passionate when discussing the benefits of
Lean Construction and its shared value system. Bill
Seed is vice president of design and construction at one
of the largest hospital management companies in the
nation, Universal Health Services, King of Prussia, Pa. He
describes his Lean journey – from stopping design
development on a $150 million hospital project to
completing a five-story, 140-bed acute care facility at
half of the projected cost – with a positive,
high-quality outcome. Seed
shares tools he implemented to save time and money, while
making his projects a success. He also addresses the cost-saving benefits of Lean
Coaches, IPD and other Lean-related principles with proven
examples.

Digital
Adventures in an Owner’s Transition from Construction to
Operations
Description:
Discover how The University
of Washington uses digital technologies to streamline and
improve facility operations and maintenance. The University’s Carrie Dossick and Eric Smith
share updates on their building handoff effort - from
construction to operations - and development of a
facilities maintenance portal, integrating asset databases
with an in-house BIM/GIS system. Highlights include results from their initial COBie
pilot project, execution plans for a second COBie project
and BIM/GIS system development. Attendees hear about the University’s evolving
processes and emerging questions; lessons learned and best
practices; and how information exchange impacts operations
and the facility/project turnover process in the context
of a broader Lean initiative.

The
New Ohio Facilities Construction Commission and
Updates on Construction Reform
Description:
Get
a clear picture of the role of the newly-developed Ohio
Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC), created last
year by merging operations of the State Architect’s
Office and the Ohio School Facilities Commission.
In addition to describing areas of responsibility
now managed by the Commission, its Chief of Projects Craig
Weise provides an update on the progress of Ohio
Construction Reform initiatives.
With only a year since the administrative rules and
new contract documents became effective, he welcomes
questions from the audience about the process.

Net
Zero Energy: The First U.S. School to Make It a Reality
Description:
A groundbreaking elementary
school in Bowling Green, Kentucky, made the term “net
zero” a reality: becoming the first public school in the
nation to earn this distinction. Kenny
Stanfield, a principal with Sherman Carter Barnhart
Architects in Louisville, walks participants through his
design of Richardsville Elementary as a Net-Zero facility,
one that produces the same amount of energy as it uses on
an annual basis. With
advanced design and construction materials, along with a
solar panel to generate electricity, the school has
exceeded expectations – generating 10% more electricity
than it used in its first full year of operation.

Communication
Challenges?
Get Your Team on the Same Page
Description:
Ask any member of a
construction project team to name their biggest challenge
and the answer almost always centers on communication. With technology innovations today, there’s no
excuse for not delivering consistent, complete information
to all the parties who need it. McGraw-Hill Construction, long a leader in bidding
information, discusses two new products that impact how
that information is delivered. Dodge BidPro is a
web-based dashboard that gives contractors a customized
view of their most promising projects and markets.
Dodge DocuPro is a comprehensive document solution
that organizes project information from design through
completion. The
product managers of these leading-edge tools share how
customers around the country are using BidPro and DocuPro
with significant results.

BIM:
How Technology-Enabled Collaboration Really Can Work for
Everyone
Description:
Most would agree that
BIM is here to stay, but not all agree they understand its
benefits. This
case study shows how a range of project participants are
effectively using Building Information Modeling (BIM) to
collaborate and share project information. Showcasing
Pittsburgh’s Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School,
currently under construction, members of its
fully-collaborative project team describe a real BIM
success story. The
owner, architect and two contractors detail ways BIM is
transforming traditional project delivery methods and
impacting the high school's construction process. Highlights
include how they have incorporated 3D coordination, 4D
scheduling and 3D visuals to work together on solutions as
challenges arise.

Joint
Venture Contracting:
Keys to Forming a Successful Partnership
Description:
Contractors are pursuing
projects with the joint venture approach now, more than
ever, which can be advantageous for all involved when some
basic fundamentals are understood. Beyond
creating a contractual partnership, companies must
consider issues that can impact them for years: Can your
partner perform? What
if they default? Are
you set up to handle the JV bookkeeping, staffing and
subcontracting? What
about long-term liabilities after the project is complete?
Local
experts cover key points needed to minimize risk and
maximize results when joint-venture contracting. Participants
gain an understanding of the accounting, bonding,
insurance, and legal concerns they need to consider before
committing to this type of partnership.

Let’s
Talk About Communication: Small Group Discussions Led By
Owners and
Design Professionals
Description:
To
wrap up a day of dialogue, Conference participants sit
with owners and design professionals at small
roundtables to discuss challenges facing the industry. One
focus this year, ironically, generates more frustration
than ever in our high-tech society: a breakdown in
communication among the parties in construction.
Roundtable Leaders – who view communication as
the make-or-break issue on many projects – anticipate
a lively discussion as they explore good ideas or best
practices that could benefit all parties in
construction. In addition, they share other thoughts on how the
design and construction of local projects could be more
successful.

Mingle
with Presenters and Guests for a De-brief on the Day
|
|
A
vital part of any professional conference is networking: the
“off-line” conversations attendees have which help build
and strengthen business relationships. Stay for a reception when the sessions conclude to meet
industry decision-makers: owners and developers, architects
and engineers, general and subcontractors and suppliers of
materials or professional services. There will be much to discuss – and often the most
powerful learning comes from fellow Conference guests.
