(M1) Sustainable Building ROI Case Study: Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas

Description:

As owners explore their options in LEED-certified buildings, the current question is, “How can I really measure my ROI?”  Hear from the team behind the Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas, the first hospital to achieve LEED platinum certification, on how they’re measuring that return.  The presenters will discuss their reasons for going green and the collaborative efforts critical to the project’s success, as well as the operational, environmental and organizational ROI that have resulted since the hospital opened in 2007.

Presenters: Alan R. Bell, director design & construction (Seton Network Facilities)
Alan Harbert, project executive (White Construction Company)

(M2) Integrated Project Delivery: How Radical Innovation in Project Delivery Leads to Dramatically Improved Results

Description:

The owner, architect and contractor of AutoDesk’s new facility in Waltham, Mass., will share their success story in utilizing Integrated Project Delivery.  This 55,000-square-foot project was completed from initiation to occupancy in eight months, achieved LEED platinum certification and was designed extensively with building information modeling software.  The first half of this session will describe how procurement, design and construction processes dramatically improved by using Integrated Project Delivery.  The second half will break down IPD into mobilization, project execution and measuring results.

(G2) What Owners Look for in Developing Relationships with Designers and Contractors

(A1) A New Economy, A New Environment for Risk Management

Description:

As the economy prompts many owners to scrutinize their processes for qualifying contractors, this session will discuss whether the fundamentals still work in a new environment for risk management. All partners – owners, architects, general and subcontractors – have a perspective in this critical conversation. Input from experts in evaluating financial, accounting and legal issues will weigh in on a new day for risk management.

Presenters: Paul Becker, president of construction practice group (Willis)
Bob Biehl, director of assurance and business advisory services (GBQ Partners LLC)
Brian Haughn, executive vice president (Haughn & Associates, Inc.)

(A2) One Owner’s Experiences in Sustainable Design – Different Projects, Different Choices

Description:

Two recent projects at Hocking College illustrate that owners have choices as they build sustainable facilities.  The college built a pair of 48,000-square-foot residence halls with sustainable criteria, but chose not to pursue LEED certification.  Yet on the Hocking College Energy Institute, a 12,000-square-foot academic building, the owner is pursuing LEED platinum certification.  The owner-architect team will speak on how they made their choices, using these projects to show options such as sustainable components with up-front costs (items like photovoltaic arrays and ground-source geothermal systems) as well as sustainable features with minimal or no up-front costs (such as proper orientation and effective passive solar design).

Presenters:

Dr. Jerrold L. Hutton, dean, advanced energy and transportation technologies (Hocking College)

William Keoni Fleming, project architect (DesignGroup)

Credits: 1 AIA LU (HSW/SD); 1 GBCI Continuing Education (CE) credit hour for LEED APs and LEED Green Associates; 1 Hour OCILB Credit

2:30-3:30 p.m. (select only one)

(A3) The Contractor Qualification Process: Lessons Learned from all the Stakeholders

BIM Beyond Clash Detection:
From Streamlined Commissioning and Closeout to Integration with Facility Management

Description:

The benefits of BIM in design and construction are well known.  But what happens to all that information once the project is complete. Learn how the Barton Malow Company used BIM on a University of Maryland Medical System project and how their BIM facilities management integration is being used post occupancy.  The benefits of utilizing a combined construction model in conjunction with field software/tracking technologies to streamline the commissioning and project closeout process all while giving the owner a more valuable and usable integrated BIM deliverable will also be discussed.

Presenters: Corinne Ambler, project engineer (Barton Malow Company)
Pete Billante, vice president of Product Management (Vela Systems)
Andy Dickey, manager – construction group (Tekla, Inc.)
