Air
Conditioning Contractors of America – Central Ohio
The
Air Conditioning Contractor of America (ACCA) Central Ohio chapter
was founded in 1906 and is believed to be the oldest continuous
local association in the HVACR industry in the United States. ACCA
was instrumental in forming the state association, the Air
Conditioning Contractors of America Ohio chapter, and continues to
play an important role in its events.
ACCA provides a visible and ethical
standard for HVACR companies in the central Ohio area, leading to
better services for homeowners, builders and commercial building
owners, and a better environment for contractors.
ACCA has taken a prominent role in
upgrading the industry by providing continuing education for member
firms' employees and by monitoring and sometimes initiating
legislation at the state and local levels to benefit both the HVACR
industry and the public.
ACCA and the Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio have a formal
agreement to support each other's efforts in promoting high
standards of business ethics and conduct in the air conditioning

American
Subcontractors Association
The
American Subcontractors Association-Central Ohio Chapter (ASA-COC)
is excited about the format of the Ohio Construction Conference, and
is happy to be a collaborative partner.
The ASA-COC
2006-2007 President Randy Young (Maghie & Savage, Inc.) said the
format of the Ohio Construction Conference will provide numerous
opportunities to “meet and mingle” with all industry
professionals, and to begin the process of addressing industry
issues through better communication.
“The ASA-Central
Ohio Chapter is honored to be a part of this new venue and its
format, which can only result in positive outcomes for the
commercial construction industry,” said Young.
Young said
the ASA-COC is also embracing change – to meet the needs of the
association and industry – key to the success of the chapter, its
members and the commercial construction community in central Ohio.
“Reflecting
on the past year and looking ahead to the coming year, it is easy to
see the constant in our industry – change,” said Young, adding,
“If you blink, something changes.
If you don’t keep up with changes, you and your company
will soon be at a disadvantage. Whether it’s a change in
technology, a change in materials, a change in regulations, or a
change in customers needs, our success as subcontractors depends on
our ability to embrace change.”
Over the past
year, the 2006-2007 ASA-COC Board of Directors has evaluated what is
working well within the chapter and what must change to meet the
needs of its members and the industry TODAY.
Consequently,
the ASA-Central Ohio Chapter is happy to announce its new
initiative – the Partners-In-Construction. The goal for the
Partners-In-Construction is to open a direct dialog with general
contractors in an attempt to better communicate the concerns as
subcontractors as well as learn about the issues for the general
contractors.
Comprised of
twelve progressive and professional subcontractors and general
contractors (six each) committed to “making a difference in the
industry,” the team will represent the best interests of the
commercial construction community in central Ohio.
Adhering to
the guiding principles of fair construction practices, the
Partners-In-Construction will meet quarterly to tackle the issues,
ask the tough questions and strategize on how to make industry
changes. This effort is an exceptional opportunity to expand and
improve the construction industry.
“Even with
all the industry and chapter changes, a constant for the ASA-COC is
membership. The board is
committed to enriching membership, keeping members involved as well
as expanding membership,” said Marla Graham, executive director,
adding, “The chapter will devote the time and resources necessary
to ensure ASA-COC members get the most for what they put into their
membership.”
Membership in
the American Subcontractors Association-Central Ohio Chapter is open
to commercial construction subcontractors, suppliers and service
providers such as attorneys, accountants and insurers. ASA members
are both union and non-union companies, ranging in size from the
smallest private firms to the nation’s largest specialty
contractors.
For more than
13 years, the ASA has partnered with the Associated Builders &
Contractors, Inc. and the Builders Exchange to host quality
programming for our respective members – the industry.

Associated
Builders & Contractors, Inc. - Central Ohio Chapter

The
Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC), Central Ohio
Chapter, continues to expand its role as a leading educator for the
construction workforce. In additional to traditional apprenticeship
training programs, ABC now offers college courses at its’ Columbus
office so that students are able to complete a construction
management degree.
"We're
offering Construction Law and Project Management Courses that are
accredited through Hocking College in our ABC office, which gives
those interested in earning their construction management degree the
convenience of staying close to home,” said Jon Howard (Jess
Howard Electric Co.) the 2008 chair.
Hundreds of students are enrolled in ABC’s apprenticeship training
program, which is approved by the U.S. Department of Labor –
Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training (BAT) and the Ohio State
Apprenticeship Council (OSAC). These registered apprentices earn
college credits through the curriculum taught in the program.
“We’ve
enhanced the existing training program by providing college credits
to students interested in obtaining credit while enrolled in the ABC
program," said Howard.
The
association has agreements with both Columbus State Community
College and Hocking College in Nelsonville, allowing students
registered in ABC's apprentice training courses to earn college
credits. In addition, ABC has a pending articulation agreement with
North Central State College in Mansfield to serve students north of
the Central Ohio area.
This
enhances the professionalism in the industry, says ABC President,
Mary Tebeau.
Students
who would like to earn college credit are enrolled in the
apprenticeship program and one of the colleges simultaneously. By
attending their apprenticeship classes, they are granted credit
through the college toward a construction-related degree. Students
can expand upon that training credit by taking additional
construction management courses offered in Columbus.
"Many
construction companies like to promote from within, and individuals
who begin as craft tradespeople can advance within the firm.
Students can earn college credit - even a construction management
degree - while they learn a trade or acquire their journeyperson's
certificate just by taking additional courses," said Tebeau.
In
addition, the chapter continues to "spread the word" about
the numerous apprentice and craft training programs available.
"I'll
mention the ABC apprenticeship program to contractors, and they
haven't heard of it and didn't realize it was a certified,
registered program," said Howard.
The
ABC program is certified for nearly 20 different trades and promoted
through local companies, schools and partnerships.
Once
again this year, ABC will send the senior apprentices in several
trades to compete head-to-head with others across the nation at the
National Craft Championships to be held in March in Puerto Rico.
The
ABC Central Ohio Chapter is part of National ABC, an association of
more than 24,000 contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers and
related firms from across the country. For more information on the organization, call Tebeau at
614/529-4300 or visit the website, www.centralohioabc.org.

Construction
Owners Association of America, Inc.
Construction Owners Association of
America (COAA) supports project owners' success in the design and
construction of buildings and facilities through education,
information and developing relationships within the industry.
Building
Owners and Developers build, not as a primary business, but as a
secondary objective. Owners and Developers stand alone in the
complex, changing construction process, representing themselves in a
major financial commitment. The management of the design and
construction process requires knowledge of an industry whose
technology evolves and changes continuously. It requires interfacing
with all the groups involved in the construction process. Timing
becomes critical to the owner's bottom line. Changes and
decision-making endlessly occur. Disputes and litigation may become
an issue. Owners and Developers, both public and private, have
needed a forum. A meeting place to gather, share common goals,
learn, discuss, survey the future and share a collective voice.
These are the goals that fostered the founding of Construction
Owners Association of America.
COAA was founded in 1994 to serve the
interests of construction project owners. COAA is comprised of a
diverse group of men and women representing construction project
owners throughout America.
COAA is dedicated to making a
significant and lasting impact on the construction industry through
its leadership by creating a unified, collective voice for owners'
issues in the construction process.
Vision
- To make an impact
on the construction industry by creating a unified collective
voice for construction project Owners and Developers.
- To balance the
interest of the parties in the construction process by
facilitating relationships between them.
- To enhance the
stature of Owners and Developers in the construction process and
increase their legislative and regulatory influence.
- To promote
learning and leadership development of Owners and Developers by
creating opportunities for owners to share ideas and learn
through educational programs and peer network groups.

this by providing aggressive leadership on business issues that
promote excellence in the creation of capital assets.
The Construction Users Roundtable was

executives representing major corporations that are among the
largest consumers in the construction industry. The formation of the
association was prompted by a desire to continue the thirty-year
effort of the Construction Committee of the Business Roundtable. The
objective in the new organization is to have broader owner
representation and increased owner input on industry issues.
CURT is an autonomous organization
that provides a forum for the exchange of information, views,
practices and policies of various owners at the national level.
Similar groups, called Local User Councils, function at the local
level and seek to address problems of cost, quality, safety and
overall cost effectiveness in their respective area.
CURT stands for improvement. It
stands for improving overall cost effectiveness. It stands for
improving the way construction is planned, managed, accounted for,
regulated and executed. It stands for improving the way workers are
motivated, supervised and work. CURT also stands for change;
changing and improving what owners permit, require and accept
responsibility for.

National
Electrical Contractors Association
The
Central Ohio Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors
Association (NECA) was chartered December 31, 1953, and is the
leading voice for the electrical contracting industry.
The Chapter’s
membership consists of electrical contractors and teledata/sound and
communications contractors whose workforce is represented by the
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
NECA’s mission is
two-fold. The association represents, promotes and enhances the
management interest of its electrical contractor members through
labor relations, education, management skills improvement,
apprentice and journeyman training, market services, public
relations, information, communication and creation of a better
business environment.
In addition, it
coordinates the collective activities of the electrical contracting
industry in the areas of government relations, technical standards,
public relations, communication, information and business ethics.
The Chapter’s
labor relations responsibilities are a result of having a bargaining
relationship with five IBEW local unions: Local Union No. 71
(Columbus, Commercial Line Construction); Local Union No. 575
(Portsmouth); Local Union No. 683 (Columbus); Local Union No. 688
(Mansfield); and Local Union No. 1105 (Zanesville).
Through this
bargaining relationship, the members of the Central Ohio Chapter
support five electrical training centers which offer the NECA-IBEW
apprenticeship program for electricians, technicians and linemen.
Our centers have agreements with several Ohio colleges which allow
enrolled apprentices to earn college degrees.
In further
demonstrating its strong allegiance to its work force, the Central
Ohio Chapter negotiated with the IBEW and OSHA and started the first
OSHA, Management and Labor Partnership in the country.
For an electrical
contractor referral or information about our apprenticeship
programs, contact the Central Ohio Chapter Manager, Brian Damant at
614/224-4408.
