Sign up now for Drug-Free Workplace Supervisor and Employee Education Training

The Builders Exchange offers drug-free workplace training for your employees to help you meet the annual supervisor and employee education components of the BWC drug-free workplace program (DFWP).

Employee Education Training Schedule
(All class times are 8 to 10 a.m.)

Supervisor Training Schedule
(All class times are 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)

These classes have also been approved by the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) for two (2) hours in Health & Safety for the following trades: electrical, HVAC, hydronics, plumbing and refrigeration.

Employees will receive education on their company policy, their responsibilities and rights, and the resources available to them if they (or one of their family members) need help.

Managers and supervisors play an important role in their company’s DFWP. They need to know their employees and observe changes in their job performance, along with documenting their observations. The BX class also prepares supervisors to confront an employee through a role-play exercise.

Each participant must have a copy of their company’s DFWP policy. Most policies will differ slightly, and the Exchange wants your employees to know where to look in your company policy for the pertinent information discussed in class.

Why participate in a DFWP? Consider these statistics:

  • Productivity – substance users are 33 to 50% less productive.

  • Absenteeism – users are absent an average of three weeks more per year, and are tardy three times more often than non-users.

  • Accidents – users are three to four times more likely to have an accident on the job and five times more likely to file a workers’ compensation claim.

  • Medical claims – substance users file 300 to 400% more costly medical claims.

  • Employee theft – an estimated 50 to 80% of all pilferage, theft and loss is due to substance-using employees.
(Statistics were found on the BWC website:
    ohiobwc.com.)

“I know all the material gone over in class because Converse has had a drug-free workplace policy for many years, but the details are easily overlooked on a day-to-day basis. It’s good to get a refresher every year and it’s important to our company,” stated Chris Converse (Converse Electric, Inc.) after attending an employee education class.

Rosemary Hurst (Converse Electric, Inc.) attended the same class and added, “The class was great. I was reminded of the finer points that don’t often occur to me. The information received was very helpful and an excellent reminder on protecting the health and safety of everyone.”

The goal is for participants to:

  • understand the scope and severity of substance use problems

  • learn about signs and symptoms of substance use and addiction

  • learn how drug/alcohol problems affect the workplace

  • become aware of what to do if a drug/alcohol problem is suspected in the workplace

  • gain an understanding of the drug-screening process

  • review commonly used drugs in the workplace

Training courses will be held at the Builders Exchange, approximately every other month.  Offsite training locations are also available for those companies not able to send their employees to our location.  To register, contact Stacey Kruse (ext. 226) at the BX.

The cost for employee education is $35 for BX members and $50 for nonmembers. The cost for supervisor training is $55 for BX members and $75 for nonmembers. A volume discount of 10% is offered for members sending five or more participants, and 20% for 10 or more participants (volume discounts only apply to classes held at the Exchange.) To receive a refund, cancellation requests must be made one week prior to the date of the class.
