The
Craftsman: Dale Decker of George J. Igel & Co., Inc. |
|
Craftsman Dale Decker is responsible for the cast-in-place concrete wall that was added to the downtown riverfront as part of the Scioto Mile Project.
Leading a crew of 20, Decker constructed the wall in multiple lifts with multiple radii, which meant the forms were constantly changing.
Inside, each lift has crossing post tension cables that had to be installed before additional lifts could be started.
It was vital that the wall be erected in stages to ensure the structure would not fail once it was backfilled and put into use.
Working along the river during the winter was a challenge, as changing water levels would force the crew to alter their timeline while still maintaining the overall project schedule.
A
key piece of the project was matching the overall look of the riverfront walls so the
new installation would not seem out of place. Decker took care to minimize any
imperfections in the finished product as the wall is open to public view at all
times.
A
member of Carpenters Local Union 200, Decker has been employed by George J. Igel
& Co., Inc. for ten of his 31 years in the industry.
A first-time Craftsmanship Award recipient, Decker has also worked on the RiverSouth Project, the Grange Insurance Headquarters and various projects at The Ohio State University.
This year, the Builders Exchange will honor 12 Craftsmanship Award recipients at the BX Annual Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at the Aladdin Shrine Center, 3850 Stelzer Rd.
