2009 BX Craftsmanship
Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Ron Ladina of The Durable Restoration Co.
His Winning Work:  Fabrication and installation of a custom conical roof at the former Hotel Holmes

The artistry of Ron Ladina can be seen in the custom conical roof on the oriel of the former Hotel Holmes at the corner of State and Main Streets in Westerville.

Using an old sketch of the original structure, Ladina spent countless hours calculating the geometric considerations for the substructure and copper panels.  The cone is curved on multiple planes which forced Ladina to measure the circumference every six inches.

New 20-ounce copper was hand cut and formed in a diamond pattern which is 17 panels high and has 14 panels in each row.  A finial that incorporates two copper balls and a lightning rod completes the design.

Ladina and two crew members fabricated more than one thousand components in the shop and re-assembled the pieces in the field.

Ladina has been employed by The Durable Restoration Co. for 15 of his 25 years in the industry.

A multiple award winner, Ladina earned his first BX Craftsmanship Award in 2001 for the First United Methodist Church in London and his second in 2005 for the First United Methodist Church in Lancaster.  He has also been recognized by another organization for work at the First Congregational Church in Akron.

This year, the Builders Exchange will honor 13 Craftsmanship Award recipients at the BX Annual Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19.
