2008 BX Craftsmanship
Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Steve Williams of Maghie & Savage, Inc..
His Winning Work:  Metal framing and drywall at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts

Since 1964, the BX Craftsmanship Awards Program has recognized the importance of craftspeople for the quality work they provide to the construction industry.

The elaborate drywall installation at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts is the work of Steve Williams and his crew of nine.

With virtually no straight lines throughout the facility, Williams worked with various angles, ellipses and inverted cones to create the finished look.  A tolerance, as small as 1/16 of an inch, had to be maintained in order to accomplish the complex design.

In the audience chamber, Williams and his crew relied on a large platform scaffold to access the reflector, ceiling ring and medallion which were custom fabricated on-site to achieve proper dimensions.

A particular obstacle for Williams was the ceiling in the lobby. Extreme precision was used to cut the drywall into various shapes and sizes in order to match the exterior ellipse of the building.

Williams has been in the construction industry for 32 years and has spent the last 22 working for Maghie & Savage.

A first-time Craftsmanship Award recipient, Williams always wanted to be a carpenter.  He started learning the trade in his father’s cabinet shop.
