2008 BX Craftsmanship
Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Mike Short of Kirk Williams Co.
His Winning Work:  Process Piping at the City of Columbus Fleet Management Maintenance Facility

Since 1964, the BX Craftsmanship Awards Program has recognized the importance of craftspeople for the quality work they provide to the construction industry.

The detailed process piping at the new Fleet Management Maintenance Facility for the City of Columbus is the work of Mike Short.

Short managed a crew of 38 to install a high pressure lubrication and tank farm for the facility.  The piping travels from the tank farm to each lubrication station to distribute motor oil, antifreeze and windshield washer fluid. The 150,000 square-foot building has more than 17,600-feet of lube piping.

To overcome the project’s large size and a tight 6-month schedule, Short implemented a time-saving system of utilizing pre-fabricated racks of pipe. Instead of adding one pipe at a time, the crew was able to put 17 pipes on each rack and could fully install five racks each day.

A member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 189, Short has been employed by Kirk Williams Co. for his entire 11-year career.

Short has also worked on the chillers at OSU’s McCracken Power Plant and at ODOT.  He is a first-time Craftsmanship Award winner.
