2008 BX Craftsmanship
Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Jeff Bunner of the Righter Co., Inc.
His Winning Work:  Removal of a steel truss bridge and construction of a wooden covered bridge

Since 1964, the BX Craftsmanship Awards Program has recognized the importance of craftspeople for the quality work they provide to the construction industry.

Jeff Bunner played a vital role in the removal of an existing steel truss bridge and construction of a new covered wooden bridge, built in a historic manner, over the Big Darby Creek on Buck Run Road in Union County.

Bunner led a crew of nine to complete the 160-foot bridge, which is one of the longest of its type in Ohio.  Because of limited access and a limited timeline for in-stream work, along with other environmental restrictions, a temporary work system was used to support the structure and provide a safe work area.

The total weight of the bridge in wood assembly alone is 524,000 pounds. Bunner was constantly reviewing the best way to work with and install the massive timbers used on the project.

The bridge was constructed of pre-fabricated support beams and flooring, while the trusses, siding and various bracing needs were developed on-site.  A cedar shake overhang along each side of the bridge adds to its historical appearance.

Bunner has been in the industry since 1993 and has been employed by The Righter Co., Inc. for all 15 years.
