2008 BX Craftsmanship
Award Recipient

The Craftsman:  Rich Buchanan of Anderson Aluminum Corp.
His Winning Work:  The Exterior Window Wall System at The Condominiums at North Bank Park

Since 1964, the BX Craftsmanship Awards Program has recognized the importance of craftspeople for the quality work they provide to the construction industry.

The skilled craftsmanship of Rich Buchanan is evident in the exterior window wall system and interior glass walls at The Condominiums at North Bank Park .

Buchanan and a crew of 20 installed a field-assembled and field-glazed wall system of approximately 4,000 windows that represent the perimeter enclosure of the building.

Buchanan developed an aluminum cover to enclose the insulation where the windows meet the concrete slab. This piece interfaces with the rest of the wall to maintain a clean look throughout. The use of a slab edge system to finish the window wall was new for Buchanan, and was vital for temperature control and aesthetics.

A particular challenge for Buchanan and his crew occurred when a schedule change called for the roof to be enclosed early. Buchanan stopped work on the 14th floor to enclose the roof, and then resumed where he left off to finish the project.

Buchanan has been employed by Anderson Aluminum Corp. for 23 of his 25 years in the trade.

A first-time Craftsmanship Award recipient, Buchanan started working for a glass company during the summer months while still in high school.
