2007 BX Craftsmanship Award Recipient

The Craftsman:
Martin Oty of Karst & Sons Masonry, Inc.

His Winning Work:
Masonry arched walkway and atrium at St. Charles Preparatory School

Martin Oty’s superior masonry skill is exhibited in the arched walkway and atrium at St. Charles Preparatory School. The walkway connects an existing building to a new facility.

Oty led a crew of 12 and was responsible for all layout while also performing work and overseeing the entire installation. One key element to the project was creating a “match” with the look of the existing historical building.

Multiple materials, including brick, block and stone, were used on the project. All material at the arch areas was laid on forms, and limestone was hand cut to fit on site.

Another challenge was created by the multiple arches. Every 12 feet an arch was repeated, for a total of seven arches. Being consistent with the reveal and scale, along with following the coursing, was crucial to this detailed project.

Oty has been employed by Karst & Sons Masonry, Inc. for 26 of his 27 years in the trade.

Architect: Berardi + Partners, Inc., Architects / Engineers
