The Craftsman: Rick Ladina of The Durable Slate Co.

His Winning Work: The Restoration of the Heritage Park Log House in Groveport, Ohio

His Challenge: The amazing artistry of Rick Ladina is evident when viewing the restoration of the logs, chinking and daubing of the Heritage Park Log House in Groveport, Ohio.

Ladina led a crew of eight to restore more than 1,200 square feet of wall surface, sculpting more than 120 gallons of wood compound in a manner that makes it virtually impossible to tell the original wood from the restored areas.

First, every log was inspected and damaged wood was removed until only sound material remained. After the wood was cleaned and dried, it was vacuumed to remove the smallest particles. Next, structural adhesive putty and wood replacement compound was applied to build up the surface until it aligned with the sound portion of the log.

After the final coat of compound was applied, Ladina carefully carved out the grain and knots in the wood, to duplicate the details of the original logs. He used a variety of tools, such as putty knives, razor blades, sticks and wire, to simulate characteristics and grain patterns.

Ladina has spent 23 years in the industry, with the past 14 years working for The Durable Slate Co.

Craftsman’s Comments: “As an artist, I have a different perspective. I see the big picture before it is complete and can then explain it to my crew.”
