The detailed brick and stonework on the Jones Day Office Building, located in the Arena District, are the beautiful work of Marty Whelan and his crew of 68. Whelan’s craftsmanship and experience is what allowed him to perform the job under tight conditions with limited storage and an extremely aggressive schedule. The project consisted of a brick masonry, cast stone and granite veneer on the exterior of a six-story building. This included the completion of a corbelled brick belt line at the third floor, granite bases at the exterior canopy and under the first floor windows, a corbelled brick parapet at the roof line with alternating pulled and flush header brick, and suspended stone soffits of varying sizes. Whelan had to guarantee more than 400 window openings to within 1/8 inch to allow for the proper fit of the windows. Once the masonry was completed, all of the windows fit perfectly. Whelan has been employed with International Masonry, Inc. for the past 20 of his 23-year career. Architect:
Lupton Rausch Architects Whelan is a two-time Craftsmanship Award winner. He received a Craftsmanship Award in 1995 for masonry at the F.W. Olin Science Hall at Denison University. Whelan’s interest in the industry began during a summer job. | Back to Craftsmanship Main Page | | Back to BX Home Page | Updated 8/11/2005 |
