Craftsmanship Awards

The Builders Exchange Craftsmanship Award is one of the highest honors for trade people in the commercial construction industry. A craftsperson is recognized as an outstanding role model in their fields -- elevating their trade to a craft.

Since 1964, the Exchange has recognized individuals who have performed the highest quality work on projects, both large and small, throughout the central Ohio area.

Award winners are chosen based on innovation, workmanship and overall quality of the project.

Completed nomination forms are due by April 21 and must include digital photographs of the project.

Winners will be announced in July and recognized by the industry in November at the 118th Annual Meeting of the Builders Exchange.

For more information about the BX Craftsmanship Awards, contact Deb Murphy (ext. 233) or Pam Austin (ext. 222) at the Exchange.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. The Craftsmanship Award recognizes an individual for his or her work.  The Builders Exchange recognizes the fact that most commercial construction work involves a number of crew members. But because the goal of the Craftsmanship Award is to salute an outstanding individual, this program is not designed as a crew award or a jobsite/project award. Crews may not be listed as the nominee; it must be an individual who was directly responsible for the craftsmanship described. Please note that certificates of recognition are sent to all crew members who worked with the award winner.

  2. Anyone in the industry may nominate an individual for the award, but the awards will be given only to employees of BX member firms.

  3. The nominated individual must be the craftsman who actually performed or directly supervised, with his or her “hands on,” the particular piece of work nominated. Nominations will not be accepted for general superintendents, project superintendents, or general foremen.

  4. Nominations must be for work in commercial, institutional or industrial projects within the past year. Nominations for residential work will not be accepted for judging.

  5. The work for which an individual is nominated must be from a project in the central Ohio area – Franklin County or one of its six adjoining counties: Delaware, Fairfield, Licking, Madison, Pickaway and Union.

  6. Providing digital photos on a CD with the nomination is mandatory. A minimum of three, and a maximum of 10 images are requested. Digital photos should be in jpeg format at 300 dpi, and labeled with the name of the nominee. Please note:  The work for which the craftsperson is nominated must be able to be photographed by the Builders Exchange photographer for public viewing, or the nomination will be ineligible for consideration.

A Few Tips for Nominators

  • The size of the project does not matter.  Craftspeople on both large and small projects have been recognized with this prestigious award.

  • Not all winning projects are visible to the public.  Don’t overlook the electricians, pipefitters and structural steel framers who performed vital work on the project.

  • This is an individual award and is for the person who provided the actual “hands-on” talent to complete the project.  Nominations will not be accepted for crews or for project superintendents.

  • Think outside the box. This award recognizes those individuals who have done outstanding work on a project.  That can mean performing the craft itself or overcoming project obstacles in a new and creative way.
